Read MoreThe total test time for IELTS is 2 hours and 44 minutes including 10 minutes of transfer time.
IELTS consists of four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
The IELTS test is recognized by over 10,000 organizations and in over 140 countries.
The IELTS test is graded on a scale from 1 to 9, with 9 being the highest score. Each module
receives a separate band score, and the overall band score is the average of the four modules. The
band score indicates your level of proficiency in English. Here is what each band score means:
Band 9: Expert user
Band 8: Very good user
Band 7: Good user
Band 6: Competent user
Band 5: Modest user
Band 4: Limited user
Band 3: Extremely limited user
Band 2: Intermittent user
Band 1: Non-user
Band 0: Did not attempt the test
The Listening module consists of four sections with ten questions each. The recording is played only once, and you have to answer the questions as you listen. The questions range from multiple choice to sentence completion to matching. The recordings are designed to test your ability to understand different accents and speaking styles.
The Reading module has three sections with 13 to 14 questions each. The texts are taken from authentic sources, such as books, newspapers, and magazines. The questions test a variety of skills, including understanding main ideas, identifying supporting details, and interpreting implicit meanings. You have to complete the test in 60 minutes.
The Writing module consists of two tasks. Task 1 requires you to describe or explain a graph, chart, table, or diagram in at least 150 words. Task 2 is an essay in response to a prompt. You have to write at least 250 words in 60 minutes. The tasks are designed to test your ability to organize ideas, use a range of vocabulary, and express opinions clearly.
The Speaking module is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. The interview has three parts: Part 1 is an introduction and general questions, Part 2 is a talk on a topic given by the examiner, and Part 3 is a discussion on abstract topics related to Part 2. The interview lasts between 11 and 14 minutes, and it is designed to test your ability to communicate effectively and fluently in English.
