Victorian Points Test 2026–27: What Skilled Visa Applicants Need to Know

Updated: 14 October 2026

Planning to apply for Victorian nomination for a subclass 190 or 491 visa? The Victorian Government has published details of its Victorian Points Test (VPT), helping applicants understand how Registrations of Interest are ranked.

The seven factors are age, English proficiency, experience in the nominated occupation, qualifications, occupation skill level, eligible partner skills and applicable Victorian skilled employment earnings. Invitations consider both overall competitiveness and priority industries, including healthcare, social assistance, education and construction. Applicants must still meet federal visa and Victorian nomination requirements.

Victorian Points Test vs Skill Select Points

These systems serve different purposes. Skill Select points determine whether you meet the Australian Government’s points requirement, while the VPT ranks applicants for Victorian nomination.

There is no fixed VPT pass mark. Your competitiveness depends on other applicants in the invitation round. Meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee an invitation, and Victoria cannot predict an applicant’s likelihood of selection. Personal circumstances, including an approaching visa expiry, do not receive invitation priority.

How English and Qualifications Affect Your Ranking

The published VPT awards:

Factor

VPT points

Competent English

0

Proficient English

100

Superior English

200

Bachelor’s or honours qualification

50

Master’s qualification

75

PhD

100

Early childhood teachers with at least one year of relevant experience and Proficient or Superior English receive additional invitation priority. Check your exact occupation against the official list.

For applicants considering another English test, start by reviewing your current results and the evidence required to claim a higher level. Likewise, assess further study against your career goals, costs and overall migration circumstances before committing to a course.

New Victorian Nomination Fees for 2026–27

Victoria’s announcement dated 13 October 2026 introduces the following fees:

Submission

Excluding GST

Including GST

Registration of Interest

$60

$66

Subclass 190 nomination application

$180

$198

Subclass 491 nomination application

$180

$198

GST applies when the applicant is in Australia at payment. The nomination application fee is payable only after an invitation when submitting the application. The ROI fee is charged once per program year; withdrawing and resubmitting within that year does not attract another ROI fee.

Is the 2026–27 Program Open?

As of 14 October 2026, Victoria says the program will open soon, with eligibility criteria and further details to be published when it opens. Applicants with an ROI from a previous program year must submit a new ROI for 2026–27 once applications open.

What Should Applicants Do Now?

Use this period to prepare a complete, accurate profile:

  • Review your English results and skills assessment expiry dates.

  • Gather evidence of qualifications and relevant employment.

  • Check that your occupation and claimed points match your supporting documents.

  • Review partner information and employment earnings before making any claims.

  • Discuss your current visa timeline alongside your nomination plans.

Avoid making major study or employment decisions based solely on an expected invitation. A personalised review can help you identify gaps and understand which next steps are practical for your circumstances.
